本校ALTのAlexa先生の終業式でのスピーチです。冗談を交えながら、ちょっと考えさせられる素晴らしいスピーチをいただきました。同時通訳していただいたので、ほとんど日本語で聞いてしまいましたが、とてもいい話でしたので、思わず動画で撮ってしまいました。
原稿もいただきましたので掲載しておきます。ぜひ読み直してください。
Have you ever noticed that something magical happens whenever we turn our Calendars to December 1st?
12 月 1 日にカレンダーをめくるたびに、魔法のようなことが起こることに気づいたことがありますか。
It’s like everyone suddenly becomes nicer… and I believe it’s because of Christmas magic.
誰もが突然よりかっこよく、かわいくなります.そして、それはクリスマスマジックのおかげです。
Our two countries work a little differently—
日本とカナダ、この 2 つの国は少し違った仕組みをしています。
you see, New Years in Canada is the perfect time to go out with your friends and have some fun.
ご存知のように、カナダの新年は、友達と出かけて楽しむのに最適です。
Christmas on the other hand is all about spending time with family and your loved ones.
一方、クリスマスは家族や愛する人と過ごします。
Today, I am here to talk to all of you about the importance of Christmas!
今日は皆さんにクリスマスについて話すように頼まれたので、クリスマスの本当の大切さを話していきます。
First off, can everyone please close your eyes?
まず、みなさん目を閉じてもらっていいですか？
I want you to think of what you want for Christmas or even your most memorable Christmas present.
クリスマスに何が欲しいか、または最も印象に残っているクリスマスプレゼントを考えてください。
Now open your eyes.

Sorry, I’m not Santa Claus, so I can’t give these things to you.

I always see Kamada Sensei do this exercise so I wanted to try it myself. HA HA HA.

There’s nothing like getting a new game, new clothes or even a Christmas cake!
新しいゲーム、新しい服を買い、さらにはクリスマスケーキを食べることは最高ですよね。
But there’s so much more meaning behind Christmas if you think about it.
ですが、クリスマスにはもっと深い意味があります。
It’s not about the presents you get or the fancy decorations you use.
それは派手なデコレーションやプレゼントのことではありません。
Christmas is the perfect time to put a pause on your life and to just live in the moment.
クリスマスは人生に少しの休憩を入れるのに最適です。
Living in the present allows you to reflect on and appreciate your precious life along with the people you share it with.
あなたの大切な人との特別な人と過ごしてきた人生を振り返り、感謝することができるのです。
It’s a time when you can ignore the past and the future and find inner peace away from all the stress you might have.
過去と未来を無視し、あらゆるストレスから離れて心の平穏を見つけることができる時間なのです。
Unfortunately, this isn’t a luxury everyone can afford.
残念ながら、これは誰もが手に入れることができる贅沢ではありません。
If you think about it, it’s already 2023 but countries like Russia and Ukraine are at war.
よく考えてみれば、もうすぐ 2023 年ですが、ロシアやウクライナなどの国はまだ戦争状態にあり、
Even now, we’re entering our 4th year of the pandemic and the number of people getting sick isn’t declining.

I think it’s important for everyone to understand that a majority of you CAN choose to celebrate Christmas or not, but that is a choice that some people do not have
クリスマスを祝えない人がいる中で、みなさんの多くはその選択ができているということを理解することが大切だと思います。
Many would say we are fortunate to be able to live in peace at the moment.
多くの人は、今、平和に暮らせることが幸運だと言うかもしれません。
But is it really luck? A better word to describe this situation is privilege and it’s very hard for someone to recognize their own privileges they have over others.
しかし、それは本当に運なのでしょうか？この選択ができるという状況を説明するには特権という言葉がいいでしょう。自分の特権を認識するのは難しいことです。
So please keep this in mind as you listen to the rest of this speech.
なので、私が話した、みんなは特権を持っているんだ、ということを意識しながら残りのスピーチを聞いてください。
Now, in this world, I truly believe that these 3 things can bring everyone together.
今、この世界では、 3 つものがみんなを一つにしてくれると心から信じています。
—Soccer, Christmas and Chicken.

Okay, I take that back because I’ve seen angry soccer fans after the world cup…

さっきの３つを音楽、クリスマス、チキンに変えます。
Now, I can prove this with a story from WWI.
さて、第一次世界大戦の話をします。
This event is known as the “Christmas Truce” and it takes place in 1914.
この出来事は「クリスマス休戦」として知られ、1914 年に起きました。
Germany and Britain were at war with each other.
ドイツとイギリスは互いに戦争をしていました。
If you didn’t know, each side dug out large trenches and in between was a large field known as “No Man’s Land”.
大きな防空壕とその間には、「無人地帯」として知られる広大な畑がありました。
On the night of Christmas Eve, the British army could hear the German army singing Christmas carols from across the field.
クリスマスイブの夜、イギリス軍は、ドイツ軍はクリスマスキャロルを歌っているのを野原の向こうから聞きました。
During the night, the two armies took turns singing carols when eventually, they began to sing the same song at the same time!
夜通し、両軍は交互にクリスマスキャロルを歌い、ついには同時に同じ歌を歌い始めました。
The next morning, the German soldiers waved their hands and yelled “Merry Christmas!” Seeing that they had no guns, the two armies made a promise to not shoot at each other.

For the rest of the day, they properly buried the dead, exchanged small gifts like food and buttons, and even played soccer in No Man’s Land.

What can we learn from this?

This moment in history is a beautiful story but it made me realize something—Christmas is just an excuse to be nice.
この歴史の瞬間は美しいものですが、何かを実感させられました。クリスマスは単なる口実にすぎないのです。
Why do we need this one day of the year to be kind to others, gift others, and appreciate time with friends and family?
他の人に親切にしたり、他の人に贈り物をしたり、友人や家族との時間を大切にしたりするために、なぜこの日が必要なのでしょうか?
To tell you the truth, I love Christmas and I know it’s a special day, but now I’m not even sure why it’s so important.
実を言うと、私はクリスマスが大好きで、それが特別な日であることは知っていますが、なぜそんなに重要なのか今はわたしもわかりません。
I feel like everyone should live their lives with some Christmas spirit every day.
誰もが毎日クリスマスの精神で過ごすべきなんじゃないかという感じがします。
With that being said, we have winter break coming up, so these are some things I would like for you to please consider.
というわけで冬休みも近いので、ぜひ考えて欲しいことがあります。
To the first years: Don’t be shy and go out with the new friends you made this year.
1年生、恥ずかしがらずに、今年できた新しい友達と一緒に出かけましょう。
To the third years: This is your last winter break in high school, so really cherish this time with your loved ones before you head towards your next step in life.
3年生、 高校最後の冬休み、次のステージに進む前に大好きな人たちと過ごす時間を大切にしてください。
To the second years: Why not do something out of the ordinary this winter break? Something you can only do in high school. I promise you won’t forget it, and you don’t want to regret it in the future!
2年生、この冬休みに、いつもと違うことをしてみませんか？高校でしかできないことを。必ずそれが忘れない思い出になることを約束します。後悔しないようにしてください。
I’m not saying you have to make crazy plans for winter break or spend all of your time with friends and family! If your inner peace means staying in your bedroom alone, that’s okay too!
冬休みにクレイジーな計画を立てたり、ずっと家族と一緒に過ごすようにと言っているわけではありません。あなたがリラックスできるのが部屋に一人でいることなら、それも大丈夫です!
Just use this time to relax and be thankful for the simplest things you have in life.
この時間を使ってリラックスし、日頃に感謝してください。
This year, Christmas will be very different for me.
今年はクリスマスはとても違ったものになるでしょう。
My family isn’t with me and I don’t expect to see snow here in Hyuga.
家族は一緒にいないし、日向では雪はみれないでしょう。
But none of this matters because I am looking forward to one thing and one thing only—finding my own inner peace by enjoying a bucket of Kentucky Fried Chicken.
しかし全然問題ありません。なぜなら一つのことを楽しみにしているからです。ケンタッキーフライドチキンのバケットを楽しんで心の平穏を見つけます。
